From soul to urban pop with Wonders of Stevie and jazzygold
The second evening of Nordischer Klang brings exciting newcomers in the field of pop: a tribute concert for Stevie Wonder brings a reunion with his legendary hits - and what might urban pop from the Faroe Islands sound like?
Wonders of Stevie
Stevie Wonder wrote and recorded many songs that are pop classics. The young Scandinavian band Wonders of Stevie was also gripped by these hits and chose them for their repertoire. In modern, refreshing arrangements - mixed with jazz, fusion and soul - the group conveys the timeless energy and emotional depth that have made Stevie Wonder's music so popular for decades. The newly founded band was formed at Skurups Folkhögskola in southern Sweden and consists of six members who share a passion for the Wonder sound. Singer Alice Wilgotsson lends expression and presence to the songs, while Emil Boesen plays powerful solos on saxophone, flute and EWI (Electric Wind Instrument) with such tonal variety. Emma Ståhl drives the groove on guitar, supported by Max Danielsson's harmonies on the keyboard. The rhythmic foundation is provided by Victor Lill-Johansen on bass and Linus Hansson on drums. Together they create a lively homage that combines respect for the original with their own musical signature. Wonders of Stevie performed at last year's Ystad Sweden Jazz Festival, where they enchanted a happy audience on a sunny afternoon in a summery garden venue.
jazzygold
Between nights of partying, hangover mornings, heartache and the longing for new beginnings, a pop universe unfolds that is both intimate and powerful. With velvety vocals, warm R&B atmospheres and electronica, jazzygold tells of life as Twenty Something - honest, vulnerable and full of groove. Her songs feel like nocturnal diary entries that become anthems: Music for dancing, crying and daydreaming, often all at the same time.
Growing up in the fishing village of Fuglafjørður on the Faroe Islands with Faroese-Kenyan parents, there is also a personal story of origin, visibility and inner growth behind her music. As a woman of colour from a small country, jazzygold creates spaces for recognition. And that doesn't just apply to a younger generation longing for real role models. With her four-piece live band, this becomes a rousing, lively presence: a place where you feel understood, carried by hooks that stick and an energy like at the best after-party that you didn't know you needed beforehand. Music that transcends borders - and leaves something real behind.
