Folk with baroque violin and nyckelharpa
Ida Meidell Blylod and Johan Hedin create atmospheric soundscapes on the baroque violin and nyckelharpa. The duo is known for its personal interpretations of old Swedish dance and song traditions. The music has its origins in the 18th century and combines influences from folk and baroque music, interweaving the raw energy of gut strings and dance rhythms with the elegance of early music. Ida's diverse playing style and Johan's innovative way of accompanying create a captivating concert experience. Ida Meidell Blylod is a folk musician and baroque violinist from Umeå. She uses the violin's wide range of expression with great passion and sometimes also sings. She has performed on many European folk and baroque stages and has been engaged several times as a teacher for international courses. Johan Hedin is originally from Småland and is a world-renowned nyckelharpa player. His curiosity to discover new sounds of the instrument and his multi-faceted playing have already led him to many exciting collaborations. The nyckelharpa (keyed harp) is a string instrument that originally dates back to the Middle Ages. The strings of the instrument are shortened mechanically using keys. Since the Baroque period, the nyckelharpa has been played almost exclusively in Sweden, but its versatility means that it has now also found its way into other genres outside of Swedish folklore. Johan and Ida met in 2015 and celebrated their premiere as a duo at the Korrö Folk Music Festival in 2019. In recent years, the two have established themselves on the Swedish and Nordic folk music stages. In 2023, they released their acclaimed debut album Klockarens musikaliska värld (The Bell Ringer's Musical World), on which they present how church musicians in the 18th century not only provided the sounds in the church, but also contributed to secular social life with light music. Just one year later, in 2024, the duo released the CD Prowinciale, which features dance music from Växjö in southern Sweden in the 18th century. The CD contains a colorful musical offering: from delicate minuets to lively polkas to sweaty contra dances, everything is included.
