Introduction as part of the opening reception for the exhibition “NECESSARY, USEFUL, NEW – Long-Term Research in Hamburg”
Introduction by Professor Dr. Mojib Latif (President of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg) at the opening reception for the exhibition “NECESSARY, USEFUL, NEW – Long-Term Research in Hamburg”
The Academy of Sciences in Hamburg is currently conducting eight long-term research projects. Their topics range from ancient manuscripts to contemporary issues. What they have in common is that they lay the groundwork for further research in the humanities. They also provide insights for the present and the future. This exhibition is the first of its kind to showcase long-term research in the humanities in northern Germany. The lecture at the exhibition opening will also address the broad range of disciplines represented in these long-term research projects. What unites them all is that they provide answers to fundamental questions: Where do we come from? How have we evolved?
Mojib Latif is President of the Academy of Sciences in Hamburg. For over four decades, he has been researching the interactions between the ocean and the atmosphere and their impact on the climate. He is a senior professor at Christian-Albrechts University in Kiel and conducts research at GEOMAR Helmholtz Center for Ocean Research Kiel. He has received numerous awards, including the Sverdrup Gold Medal from the American Meteorological Society, the German Environmental Prize, the Alfred Wegener Medal from the German Meteorological Society, and the Federal Cross of Merit.
