Where do I come from, where am I going, what is fate and what can I decide for myself - and above all: what do I need to feel at home in a place? Berit Glanz raises such questions in her novel "Unter weitem Himmel". The author, who was born in Kiel and now lives with her family in Reykjavik, spans a broad arc from the Breton Icelandic fishermen of the early 20th century, who fought for their livelihood under the harshest conditions and many of whom lost their lives at sea, to a modern-day genetic scientist who studies the DNA of Icelandic animals and her own unclear origins.
A novel about life on this legendary island in the far north of Europe and also a novel about love: we follow whether the French fisherman Olier will find happiness with the Icelandic nurse Sorun and whether there will be a happy ending for the German Maris and the Pole Adam in the East Fjords.
Berit Glanz, born in 1982, studied theater studies and Scandinavian studies in Munich, Stockholm and Reykjavík. Her debut "Pixeltänzer" (2019) was nominated for the aspekte literature prize and was awarded the Hebbel Prize 2020, the novel "Automaton" was published in 2022 and the non-fiction book "Filter - Digitale Bildkulturen" in 2023. She received the Bremen Net Residency 2020 for a project on AI. As a cultural journalist, Glanz writes about memes, digital literature and other aspects of internet culture. She is also a member of the editorial team of the digital feuilleton 54books.
