This lecture examines the living and working conditions of female artists around 1900, as well as the challenges involved in researching their biographies. Women of that era had to overcome significant obstacles in order to realize their full potential and express themselves through their art. They therefore developed strategies to free themselves from the restrictive constraints of bourgeois and social norms in order to pursue their own aspirations and needs. Artists’ colonies played an important role in their efforts toward emancipation and in the professionalization of their artistic work.
Speaker: Art historian Henrike Heller isa cultural worker and co-curator of the special exhibition “Women Artists around 1900 in Ahrenshoop,” which is on view at the art museum through the end of March. Henrike Heller is a doctoral candidate at Leuphana University Lüneburg and a doctoral fellow of the Friedrich Ebert Foundation.
