Darßer NaturfilmFestival 2025: Program section "Citizens of the Sea"
The shark is in danger. Many species are threatened with extinction. The trade in shark meat and fins plays a central role. The impact on the marine ecosystem is enormous. Europe is the largest exporter of shark meat and fins. The shark trade is a billion-dollar market. While a fisherman in the EU gets 10 to 12 euros for a kilo of fin, in Asia they pay up to 1,500 euros. Shark fin soup is a traditional dish there. The biggest sales of shark meat and fins on European soil are made by fishing companies in Vigo, a fishing town on the Spanish Atlantic coast. Marine biologist Lukas Müller finds several tons of shark meat at the fish market there, mainly young animals that have not yet reached sexual maturity.
