Based on the novel “The Walk from Rostock to Syracuse” by Friedrich Christian Delius, Lars Jessen tells the story of a man driven by wanderlust to flee the GDR—but who wants to return after his journey.
In the early 1980s: Paul Gompitz lives in the GDR. He hadn’t actually intended to leave his homeland. But he wants to travel—especially to Italy. Ever since reading Johann Gottfried Seume’s *Walk to Syracuse*, he has dreamed of taking that same journey himself. All attempts to leave the country legally fail, and over the course of several years, Paul begins preparing his escape by sailboat. After his journey, however, he wants to return.
