Concert
MAX PROSA & MERET BECKER
On Tour in Miniature
Max Prosa is a storyteller. When you hear him perform solo on guitar or piano, you can experience this in its purest form. He plays new and old songs, such as “Flügel,” which was written back in 2012 but didn’t reach a wide audience until 2020, thanks to Egon Werler’s rendition on the talent show “The Voice.” He also performs the new song “Verschwende Dich,” which was featured as the title track of the movie “15 Jahre” by Hannah Herzsprung and gained wider recognition as a result. Behind these successes that have come to the forefront, Max Prosa has been working unwaveringly for years on his lyrics and songs, performing concerts, and reading his poems—which he has collected in his new poetry collection “Als wir ein Sternbild waren,” whose first edition sold out in no time. The readers and listeners become a community; a bubble forms around them that stretches space and time. Max tells stories of mothers and sons, kings and thieves, and, of course, the great themes of chanson: transience, passion, and love—always in his own unique way, touching everyone’s heart.
Meret Becker has been working as a film actress and chansonette since she was 17. Over time, she has also developed into an entertainer, musician, composer, music producer, and artistic director of her concert programs. She describes herself as a performing artist, sound explorer, and “reprise clown.” She is self-taught, has received numerous awards, lives in Berlin and France, and is a single mother to an adult daughter. Meret Becker has been composing and writing her own music and songs since around 1995. She keeps her compositions mostly simple, often loop-like, and then layers them sonically. She often uses delicate, soft sounds, such as music boxes, glockenspiels, flageolet tones, glass harps, or celestas. In addition to mechanical instruments, she does not shy away from electronic processing. She loves the pauses and the fragility in music. Nevertheless, her compositions can certainly develop into extensive, imposing pieces. She describes her music, among other things, as “optical music” because she constructs musical images, similar to a film score, or as “music en miniature,” which alludes to the minimalism she cultivates. Accompanying herself for the most part is both a major challenge and a lot of fun, because aside from the singing saw, she is not a virtuoso on any instrument. She uses the instruments she plays more functionally and purposefully to create timbre. Now she performs solo or in a duet with Max Prosa.
