"La donna è mobile " made the Duke of Mantua one of the most famous tenor roles in opera history. Yet Verdi tells a story that goes far beyond that of a cynical seducer. At the center of the story is the court jester Rigoletto, who protects himself from a morally corrupt world with mockery and bitterness. When the Duke discovers Rigoletto’s daughter Gilda, the power games of the elite turn into a struggle over love, guilt, and revenge.
