How are wealth and property linked to voting behavior? How is the post-reunification era covered in schools? Can Angela Merkel and Tokio Hotel be role models? And why are there only West Germans in the photos of the reunification celebrations? Renowned journalist Marieke Reimann was born in Rostock in 1987 and grew up with her sister in a prefabricated apartment building with their mother. As a child of the post-reunification era, she experienced East Germany in the 1990s—a time marked by upheavals in people’s lives, poverty, and uncertainty. Reimann has learned firsthand how difficult it is for a young woman without wealth or connections to make her way in West German circles of power, and just how great the structural inequalities between East and West still are. In her book, she aims to tell East German stories more authentically. All too often, she has been confronted with the stereotype of the left-behind, Saxon-accented, whining East German—her commentary on this for *Tagesthemen* went viral. She makes a powerful plea for a renewed interest in one another.
