Schleswig-Holstein: Salt marshes. Flocks of birds. Wind turbines. Back at her parents’ house, the narrator almost becomes a young girl again herself, recalling her domineering mother: the Protestant pastor who was always there for everyone else but forgot her own child at the supermarket. She used to wear pumps under her robe, but now wears a real-hair wig as she plans her own funeral. How do you deal with old wounds when there isn’t much time left? How do you say goodbye when it’s actually too soon? Is it okay to laugh while you’re grieving? This exceptionally beautiful debut novel blends comedy and tragedy and creates space for questions that we all face sooner or later.
