Manja Präkels: Breathing against the wind
"I stand on the banks of the icy Oder. Breathe. In. In. In. I can't get the air out of my lungs again. Instead, a student's question continues to circle in my head: 'Frankfurt was in the GDR?' With genuine astonishment in his gaze. My body remembers one of those winter flag-raising drills. Heads bowed. Afraid of a reprimand. Also of praise. The redemptive bell. Exhale. Out. Out. The Oder flows into the Baltic Sea. My thoughts follow the fish through space and time." - Manja Präkels
For the second volume of the 'haɪ̯maːtn̩ series (published by Haus der Kulturen der Welt), Manja Präkels travels to Frankfurt an der Oder and thus reaches further stations in her life to date. Her literary reportage is complemented by photographs by Christian Borchert.
With our event, we are accompanying the writer, journalist and musician Manja Präkels on a journey through her literary work. She is currently the town writer in Triebsees. From the early clear-sighted "Kaltland. Eine Sammlung", her award-winning novel "Als ich mit Hitler Schnapskirschen aß", the essay "Gegen den Wind atmen" and the hot-off-the-press reportage volume "Extremwetterlagen".
At the end they sing.
