Being There – Drawings & Woodblock Prints, 2016–2026
The life and artistic work of graphic artist Manfried Scheithauer (*1936) are closely linked to Güstrow, the city of Barlach. This connection is also evident in a special way in what is now his third solo exhibition at the Städtische Galerie Wollhalle.
To mark his 90th birthday this year—following the exhibitions in 2006 and 2016 celebrating his 70th and 80th birthdays, respectively—the artist once again offers a glimpse into the works he has created over the past decade. On display are over 100 woodcuts, charcoal and colored chalk drawings, accompanied by books and book designs that are also part of his body of work.
The exhibition reflects the remarkable diversity of themes that Manfried Scheithauer has explored in his work for many decades. The numerous depictions of animals and landscapes, for example, bear witness to his love of nature, while references to Ernst Barlach or his exploration of Güstrow’s heraldic animal demonstrate his connection to his adopted home. Illustrations for satirical texts, sayings, and folk wisdom are also an important part of his body of work. In addition, Manfried Scheithauer takes a stand on current social issues, including through time-specific satirical prints and thought-provoking images, as well as his Pierrot prints.
