A varied educational and cultural event entitled "Schwerin and France - yesterday and today" begins at 5 pm
On September 12, the adult education center of the state capital opens its autumn semester with a "Long Night" and impressively presents its wide range of offers.
Under the title "Schwerin and France - yesterday and today", a varied educational and cultural event will begin at 5 p.m., which will make you want to discover the traces of France in Schwerin - with exciting impulses from history, art, music, culture, language and society, presented by well-known Schwerin residents.
"I am delighted that our adult education center, together with the Franco-German Citizens' Fund, has succeeded in reviving this tried and tested format after several years. Just a glance at the program clearly shows how much 'France' can be found in Schwerin and how many well-known speakers from our city will be sharing their knowledge and enthusiasm with us," says Silvio Horn, the State capital Schwerin's Councillor for Culture.
After a musical introduction by mezzo-soprano Sofia Maeno, the adult education center invites visitors to take part in a big France quiz in a relaxed atmosphere. In addition to lots of fun and shared knowledge, there are attractive prizes to be won in France.
The subsequent program includes knowledge-packed lectures.
Mathias Schott, first chairman of the castle association, asks what makes Schwerin Castle and Chambord Castle architectural sisters. City historian Dr. Jakob Schwichtenberg will report on the fate of French prisoners of war in Schwerin in 1870/71, while art historian and long-time employee of the State Museum Dr. Kornelia Röder will explain how the Frenchman Marcel Duchamp turned art on its head. And Marita Schwabe, the former director of the adult education center, gives personal insights into her second home, Paris.
At the adult education center, taster courses in French and a relaxation course with art are of course a must. French songs will be sung by and with the vhs women's choir, and Gerhard Köhler will play the accordion through the walls of the Schelfschule.
Culinary highlights will be provided by vhs cooking course instructor Susanne Kirstein and sommelier Theo Krömer. Modern finger food, as prepared in the vhs cooking studio, will be available for tasting. Recipes from regional historical cookbooks with a French connection will provide inspiration. Theo Krömer offers his knowledge "live" in three wine seminars.
The evening will be rounded off with the contemporary French film "Das Fest geht weiter", which will be shown in the vhs auditorium by the "Kino unterm Dach e.V." association.
Throughout the event, local associations will present their French-related activities in the corridors of the adult education center and look forward to talking to guests. The current exhibition "Kein Spaziergang!" by the working group in the Network for People in Schwerin will also be on display.
The entire current program of the "Long Night" and the vhs autumn semester 2025 can be found at: www.vhs-schwerin.de
Registration for the "Long Night" is not required and is free of charge. Exceptions are the culinary offers. They will be paid for on site.
The event is funded by the Franco-German Citizens' Fund.
