Poetry slam evening in the park | Edition 4 "Best of Poetry Slam"
As part of the Literature Week 2026
Wednesday, June 3, 2026 | 8 p.m.
Rhododendron Park Graal-Müritz

A poetry slam is a literary competition: Authors present texts they have written themselves, usually within five to seven minutes, without props, without disguises, without music. What they bring is language - poetry, prose, spoken word, comedy, polemics. What becomes of it on stage is created at the moment of performance, in the intersection of literature and performance. The audience decides who wins, usually via a points jury from the audience's own ranks.

The format was invented by construction worker and poet Marc Smith in 1986 in a Chicago jazz club because readings had become too quiet and too inconsequential for him. Today, poetry slam is an international phenomenon with its own scene, its own championships and its own language between stage and book. In Germany, it has been part of UNESCO's intangible cultural heritage since 2016.

We invite you to the fourth edition on June 3, 2026 at 8 pm in the Rhododendron Park Graal-Müritz. On stage: five voices from the German-language slam scene, plus a moderator to guide you through the evening. Nobody knows yet what the texts will be - that's also part of the format.

Performing are:

1. Hendrikje Wassenaar - Berlin

Hendrikje Wassenaar is a spoken word artist and slam poet active in Berlin who has been performing regularly on the Berlin-Brandenburg scene for several years. In 2026, she qualified for the semi-finals of the Berlin/Brandenburg Poetry Slam Championship at the Waschhaus Potsdam. Nationally, she has performed at the Hamburg organizer Kampf der Künste at the Birdland jazz club, where she was on the line-up of the club poetry slam alongside Arielle Cottingham, Konrad Moritz and Verena Tiedau.

2nd Marc(-André) Bobzin - Leipzig

Marc Bobzin has been active in the slam scene since 2023 and won the Leipzig City Championship in Poetry Slam in his debut year. He is the Saxon Champion 2025 and third place (trizemeister) of the Saxony Championship 2024 and qualified for the German-speaking championships. He now performs nationwide, including at the Chemnitz University of Technology's lecture hall slam, in Wiesbaden and as a headliner at the Landsberg Poetry Slam in 2026.

3rd Olli Schumann - Dresden

Olli Schumann is a slam poet and stand-up comedian from Dresden, performs regionally and throughout Germany and was a finalist in the Saxon State Poetry Slam Championships in 2023 and 2024. She is part of the Dresden stand-up and slam scene, writes humorous stage texts and has appeared on stage at the preliminary round of Olaf Schubert's Humorzone Dresden newcomer competition, the Karli Comedy Club Leipzig and the Quatsch Comedy Club Hot Shot, among others. Her solo program "Wenn ich groß bin" combines comedy and literature with autobiographical self-irony.

4th Richard König - Schwäbisch Hall

Richard König comes from near Schwäbisch Hall and studied rhetoric and sociology in Tübingen, where he still lives today. He can look back on over 300 events throughout Germany and was runner-up in the Baden-Württemberg Poetry Slam; he also regularly performs at dialect slams. He is a three-time winner of the Landsberg Poetry Slam and is considered an established figure on the southern German poetry scene with a distinctly lyrical, performative style.

5th Portokaliz - Eberswalde

Portokaliz is a slam poet from the Berlin/Brandenburg area and competed in the 2024 Berlin-Brandenburg Poetry Slam Championship with the text "kann der Tod Liebe sein?". In 2026, Portokaliz once again qualified for the semi-finals of the Berlin/Brandenburg state championship at the Waschhaus Potsdam.
