Anti-fascism was a state doctrine in the GDR. But how did the SED dictatorship actually deal with the National Socialist legacy, anti-Semitic and xenophobic phenomena and neo-fascist tendencies? How did these continue to have an impact after the fall of the GDR? Dr. Volker Höffer (historian, Federal Archive - Stasi Records Archive) will explore these questions in his lecture on 17 June 2026 at the St. Spiritus Socio-Cultural Centre in Greifswald, using the example of the GDR Baltic Sea district of Rostock and on the basis of extensive research in the records of the GDR secret police. Afterwards there will be an opportunity to talk to the audience. Admission free.
On the same day, the Federal Archive - Stasi Records Archive and the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Commissioner for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship will be holding a citizens' consultation.
An employee of the Stasi Records Archive in Rostock will explain the regulations for accessing the Stasi files and help with the application process. A valid identity document is required. Questions about the rehabilitation of political injustice in the GDR will be answered by an employee of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Commissioner for the Reappraisal of the SED Dictatorship
