An event organized by the Ernst Moritz Arndt Society in cooperation with the Stralsunder Geschichtsverein e. V. and the Konrad Adenauer Foundation
Both East and West are likely to agree on this: Konrad Adenauer set the course. Commitment to the West and rearmament, reconciliation with Israel and France, a player on the keyboard of anti-communism and restrained reappraisal of the Nazis - what of this positioning can be found in today's Germany? Is the possible reintroduction of compulsory military service based on the fact that a new course must also be set today?
A double lecture by Prof. Dr. Hermann Wentker from the Institute of Contemporary History and Dr. Doreen Franz from the Federal Chancellor Adenauer House Foundation will help us to take a look back at the time of the young (West German) Federal Republic, the East German-critical perception of the first Chancellor of this republic, who was born 150 years ago, and contrast it with his groundbreaking decisions against Stalin-style neutrality, among other things.
In a subsequent panel discussion involving the audience with Arne Schmidt from the Junge Union and Felix Wizowsky from the MV State Student Council and the Young Socialists, the aim is to talk about today's expectations and aspirations of a peace-oriented society, to reflect on the drive to defend democracy in our time and to sound out the interests of those who undoubtedly question our free basic order.
This politically informative afternoon will begin with a welcome address by Stralsund's Lord Mayor Dr. Alexander Badrow.
