On the third evening of the series, Mr. Justin Reimers from the University of Hamburg will speak about Mecklenburg and Pomeranian towns in the Hanseatic Confederation.
The third and final evening of the "Museum Winter" lecture series will focus on the history of the late Hanseatic League. The speaker will be Mr. Justin Reimers from the University of Hamburg. Mr. Reimers is currently researching the late Hanseatic history of the 15th and 16th centuries.
The Hanseatic Confederation was the culmination of the Hanseatic League's reorganization efforts from the end of the 15th century. The treaty concluded in 1557 transformed the loose group of Hanseatic cities into a fixed association of cities with clear rules and obligations. Many towns in Mecklenburg and Pomerania were part of this confederation.
The lecture shows how the Hanseatic cities supported each other against attacks on the basis of the confederation treaty and what role the individual Hanseatic cities from Hanseatic City of Wismar to Kolberg played in this.
It is made clear how differently the member cities of the confederation expressed their support in conflict situations. Wismar and Rostock in particular chose very different strategies.
