Join a nature park ranger to gather the fruits of the forest and, with guidance, use them to make pretty fall decorations. Especially suitable for families with children.

Fall transforms the forest into a colorful paradise full of creative possibilities. Leaves in every shade of yellow, red, and brown swirl through the air, inviting you to create imaginative leaf gnomes. Acorns, chestnuts, and other fruits are particularly abundant right now, so this fall family hike is the perfect opportunity to craft funny little acorn men and chestnut monsters. With a little imagination, these can become little works of art—whether made with matches, wool, or natural materials collected in the forest. This craft activity not only fosters children’s creativity but also teaches them about the diversity and importance of fruits and seeds for wildlife.

During the hike through the Hohe Holz, the focus is not only on playing with natural materials but also on experiencing the forest together. The rangers tell exciting stories about the lifestyles of the animals that feed on the fruits and explain the importance of berries, mushrooms, and beechnuts for the ecosystem. If you look closely, you might even spot traces of squirrels, wild boars, or birds helping themselves to the autumnal treats.

The hike is particularly well-suited for families with children, as it conveys knowledge in a playful way and encourages participants to experience the forest with all their senses. Collecting and crafting help draw attention to nature’s little treasures and allow young and old alike to get active together. After the hike, participants can take their collected figures home—as a lovely memento of an eventful fall day in the nature park.

To keep everyone well-fed, we recommend bringing a small picnic, as there will be a break along the way where everyone can examine their collected treasures and have a snack. Weather-appropriate clothing and sturdy shoes are important to ensure the outing is enjoyable even in cooler or damp fall weather.

The Mecklenburg Schweiz and Lake Kummerow Nature Park invites you to join this hike through the Hohe Holz. The meeting point is on October 17 at 2:00 p.m. at the parking lot of the “Hohes Holz” restaurant near Teterow. The event is open to nature lovers of all ages who want to experience the diversity of fall and get creative.

Registration is not required. The nature park administration is available to answer any questions. We look forward to seeing many participants and to a colorful, cheerful fall day!
