The film centers on Katharine, who is no longer a young woman—the only daughter of a wealthy couple and the granddaughter of a prominent writer, whose biography her mother has been trying to write for decades. Katharine tries to avoid romance, defies conventions, and loves mathematics—but above all, astronomy. Yet in the early 20th century, women are barred from studying at Cambridge, even if they meet all the requirements. In general, the era is marked by strict patriarchal and even misogynistic structures, which Katharine tries to resist. When she realizes that her academic and intellectual opportunities are far greater as a married woman, she accepts the proposal of her unsuspecting childhood friend, William Rodney.
