What remains of a theater once the curtain has long since fallen? The stories, the people, the images—and the memories that live on. In 1976, a puppet theater was founded in the regional capital of Neubrandenburg that would go on to enrich the theatrical landscape of the GDR for years to come. In October 1977, it opened as the 13th state-subsidized puppet theater in the GDR. The founding members were Gisela Templin (artistic director), Peter Waschinsky (artistic director), Gabriele Hänel, Werner Henrich, Thomas Mierau, and Christian Werdin.
The year 2026 marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of this special theater. This is reason enough to bring its history, its artistic achievements, and the people behind it back into the public consciousness. To that end, we invite you to an evening where theater history comes to life. Former members and colleagues from that era will come together, including puppeteer, director, and theater maker Peter Waschinsky, as well as others involved during the theater’s founding and early ensemble years.
The program:
The evening will open with the theater performance “And the Rooster Is Always Right,” featuring the puppet show “Hahn Weltherr” (directed by Peter Waschinsky). Marlis Hirche and Oliver Dassing from the theater group “Die Pyromantiker Berlin” will bring it back to the stage with a comedic frame story (directed by Gabriele Hänel).
After a short intermission for set changes, the program continues on the big screen with excerpts from the film “Hahn Weltherr”(1982), shot in Neubrandenburg and directed by Peter Waschinsky and Holm Freier.
With the trailer for the artistically impressive and internationally acclaimed stop-motion puppet feature film “Memory Hotel,” we would like to once again draw attention to this work by Heinrich Sabl, which will finally be completed in 2026 after 30 years.
Another special highlight on the big screen is the Neubrandenburg premiere of the documentary “Der Meister des Hand-Werks – der Puppenspieler Peter Waschinsky” (2026 / Director: Dominik Wessely).
The evening will conclude with a panel discussion in which former theater members and other participants will come together to share memories, experiences, and different perspectives with the audience.
