The second English-language film (after *The Change*) by Polish director Jan Komasa aims to pull the rug out from under the audience.

At the beginning of the film, we are abruptly confronted with 19-year-old Tommy, who throws himself into a fast-paced, drug-fueled party scene and is a total jerk. He doesn’t give his sweet girlfriend the time of day, hits on other girls right in front of her, insults everyone in sight, gets into fights with bouncers, and generally runs amok to the best of his ability. The fact that we find him a few minutes later, kidnapped and chained up like a dog in the basement of a country house, doesn’t seem like a completely undeserved fate. Up to that point, the story takes a detour through a remarkable shift in perspective to focus on the well-to-do household. Rina, a young Macedonian woman who has immigrated illegally, applies for a job as a cleaning lady and gets to know the family during a tour of the estate: the obligingly friendly employer Chris, the depressed matriarch Kathryn, their son Jonathan, who smiles politely, and finally the involuntary guest in the basement. We then witness the draconian “re-education” that the well-meaning psychopath Chris subjects his prisoner to.
