A satirical social comedy based on the novel by Gabriele Tergit
Berlin, winter 1929. In a cheap variety show, a newspaper reporter discovers the folk singer Käsebier. A bit provincial, a bit kitschy—and really nothing worth talking about for long. But the reporter needs a good story. So he hypes Käsebier up as the next big star. And suddenly, everyone wants to see him.
High society flocks to his performances, his songs become hits, Ufa plans a movie, and a construction contractor senses a big business opportunity. Käsebier takes Kurfürstendamm by storm—or rather, the image of Käsebier that newspapers, audiences, and profiteers collectively create. A hype emerges, fuels itself, and grows ever larger. Until the question arises: What happens when interest moves on and the next sensation is already waiting?
