Young concert (11+)
From Albert Christoph Dies'
Biographische Nachrichten von Joseph Haydn, 1810
"(...) Haydn had asked the timpanists in particular to take thick sticks and beat them quite mercilessly. They met his expectations completely. The sudden thunder of the whole orchestra startled the sleeping people, they all woke up and looked at each other with disturbed and astonished expressions. (...) But since during the Andante a sensitive young lady, carried away by the surprising effect of the music, was not able to counteract it with sufficient nerve power, fell into a faint and had to be led out into the fresh air, some used this incident as material for censure and said that Haydn had always surprised in a gallant manner, but this time he had been very rude. Haydn cared little for the censure; his ultimate aim of being heard was complete and even achieved for the future."
