What began over 35 years ago as the dawn of a new era is now being called into question by more and more East Germans - democracy in East Germany. For many, the long road to the right began on the left. It leads through a reunified Federal Republic that is itself in the deepest crisis in its history. Hensel does not fall into line with the usual narratives about the East: she takes us on a journey at the end of which she hopes to find an explanation as to why democracy is no longer an option for many East Germans.
Jana Hensel, born in 1976, grew up in Leipzig and became famous with her portrait of the young East German generation "Zonenkinder" (2002). She works as a journalist for DIE ZEIT, has published numerous bestsellers and was honored as Journalist of the Year for her reporting on East Germany.
