Lale had imagined her life at 40 would be different: Since her divorce, she has been living back in her childhood bedroom—caring for her mother, who has dementia. By traveling to Amrum, Lale hopes to escape, at least temporarily, the challenges of this already difficult relationship. But before her long-awaited respite can begin, her mother becomes entangled in a murder case that delves deep into her dark memories: her time as a “Verschickungskind” (evacuated child), alone on the island of Föhr. But the clues surrounding the crime reach even further back, into a dark chapter of German history that her mother would rather keep silent about...
