“I Sing So I Won’t Cry”: Psychoanalytic Reflections on the Music of the Argentine Tango
As part of the “Psychoanalysis & Art” series with Mechthild Kessler (Tübingen)
Argentine tango emerged in the late 19th century during a time of existential economic upheaval and global migration. The phrase “a short song for a long farewell” aptly captures the atmosphere of loss and parting, which was never fully resolved but rather became a sense of life that shapes one’s identity.
The lecture explores how tango music both conveys the melancholic mood associated with loss and, at the same time, opens up a creative space for expression. Exemplary song lyrics and audio samples, as well as the history of the tango’s origins, are contextualized within psychoanalytic frameworks.
For the research underlying this lecture, Mechthild Kessler received the 2021 Academic Research Award from the Foundation of the German Psychoanalytic Association.
Event in cooperation with the Institute for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis Mecklenburg-Vorpommern e.V. (IPPMV) together with the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern Regional Association of the DGPT.
