Experience the huge flocks of starlings and swallows before they go to sleep in the reeds, with Paul Blei from the Förderverein

Up until the 19th century, the idea that swallows spend the winter at the bottom of lakes and ponds, covered in mud, persisted. This assumption probably arose because swallows gather in the reeds on the banks of water bodies in the fall to spend the night. Occasionally, exhausted birds would fall into the water and die. The dead animals found in the mud eventually led to this misconception.

Today we know that the swallows migrate to Africa in the fall to spend the winter there. Before their departure, however, hundreds of them gather to roost in the reeds. Starlings are also present at this time: thousands of them fall into the reeds at dusk. Before they go to rest, they fly over the reeds in spectacular formations like dark clouds and offer an impressive natural spectacle.

Anyone interested is cordially invited to witness this unique experience. Paul Blei from the association will be on hand to answer questions and provide explanations. The meeting point is on Saturday, September 12 at 7 p.m. in Bülow on the jetty by the boathouses.
