Viewing ships on board; family tours of the ship and the exhibits; environmental education activities for children; blacksmithing, rope-making, and a “nail-driving” contest; Mini Sail: building and steering model ships; arts and crafts, face painting, and more.
Under the motto "ALL HANDS ON DECK," the historic ship will open its decks from Thursday, August 6, through Sunday, August 9. From the upper deck of the historic ship, visitors can watch the ships of the Hanse Sail. On Saturday, live commentary will also be provided on the maritime spectacle on the Warnow River. In addition to marveling at the Hanse Sail historic ships, visitors can take a tour of the historic ship on Friday and Saturday to look over the engineer’s shoulder and explore the permanent exhibitions “SHIPOWNERS,” RUDER, SEEMANNSGARN, as well as the special exhibitions TURNTON 2047 and ARBEITER DES MEERES. In addition, the museum educators offer family-friendly guided tours and various hands-on activities for children.
At the Historic Boat Yard, right next to the Maritime Museum, trips on the Warnemünde dinghy—also known as a “Tweismaker”—take place from Friday through Sunday. This boat was painstakingly rebuilt by volunteers based on a historical model and impressively demonstrates just how sturdy a fishing boat had to be in the 19th century to fish on the Baltic Sea.
Those who prefer to stay on land can make ropes and cables for boatbuilding or forge small souvenirs at the Historic Boat Yard on the Reeperbahn.
Those who’d like to be captain for a day can visit the Mini Sail, located between the traditional ship and the Historic Boat Yard. Here, you can build model ships and then steer them from the shore. In addition, there’s a wide variety of models to marvel at—on land, in the air, and on the water.
