Hans-Jürgen Syberberg talks about his film series *Demminer Gesänge*

In May 1945, the Red Army reached Demmin as well. Syberberg, who was already living in Nossendorf in 1945—just as he does today—was nine years old when, hidden in a field, he watched the town burn in early May 1945. He presents the motifs and perspectives of his monumental work of remembrance, which centers on the town itself: its market square, whose facades he has also recreated on film, as well as the largest mass suicide in German history, which took place in late April and the following weeks of 1945 out of fear of rape and violence.
