Starting November 26, 2026, the historic market square and the fish market in the heart of Greifswald’s Old Town will once again become the Christmas market.
Even though it’s one of the smaller markets in the north, it offers everything you could hope for: three weeks of treats and mulled wine, peace and contemplation, but also hustle and bustle and entertainment, meet-and-greets with Santa Claus, and opportunities to shop for gifts. Surrounding the 16-meter-tall Christmas tree, festively decorated wooden stalls and twinkling lights blend seamlessly into the medieval brick architecture of the Old Town. The Christmas pyramid, the fairy-tale forest with its stories, the historic carousel, and the Ferris wheel make children’s eyes light up.
The fish market transforms into a cozy village. Here, away from the hustle and bustle, guests can relax by the fire pit with hearty food, mulled wine, or glögg.
Unique to the north: For the past thirteen years, the Greifswald Christmas Market has featured a wooden Advent church. Operated by the Kapellenverein Greifswald e. V., church congregations and clubs invite visitors daily from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. to enjoy a contemplative program right next to the festive hustle and bustle of the Christmas market.
On the first Sunday of Advent, Santa Claus is expected to arrive on one of the historic ships in the museum harbor. Children can greet Santa Claus on the steps at the harbor and as he crosses the pedestrian bridge.
Anyone who misses Santa Claus on the first Sunday of Advent can visit Santa’s office hours every Wednesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday starting at 4:00 p.m.
