A musical drama by Erik Gedeon
“I haven’t felt this young since I was… since I was… ninety-five!” Many years ago, the theater closed its doors for good. But a small group of former actors and actresses is still there, because the building is now used as a retirement home. On a regular basis, these now very elderly people reclaim their stage and revel in nostalgic memories of past successes and the wild music of their youth. Vitality returns to their frail bones; wrinkles and thinning hair are no longer an issue, for adrenaline—and even a touch of eroticism—swirls through the air. Even the old conflicts and jibes seem incredibly invigorating. If it weren’t for the caregiver, who repeatedly reminds the elderly of reality with songs to clap along to and musical performances about infirmity and transience. But no sooner has she left the room than melancholy is swept off the stage, and the exuberant show put on by the former theater stars continues.
The Cuban musicians from the “Buena Vista Social Club,” all over 80 years old, have made the whole world dance—and in 2001, they inspired Erik Gedeon to create the musical evening “Thalia Vista Social Club.” Under the title “Forever Young,” this musical drama has been taking theater stages by storm for years with its death-defying wit, exuberant zest for life, and rousing songs. So put an end to the fear of aging—because music keeps you young!
