What befell soccer in the GDR in the fall of 1989 was a catastrophe. West German club managers such as Reiner Calmund invaded the East and signed the stars of the local top league off the pitch. Around 150 GDR footballers moved to the West in the first few years after reunification. After stars like Sammer, Kirsten and Thom, the young players left. Often only shady businessmen came from the West. The wild post-reunification years left the East in ruins. Many clubs crashed, some reinvented themselves. Great success stories were the exception. As in real life, however, the end was also a beginning. Today, those clubs that have found their own way are celebrating success. Whether in the regional league or the Champions League. 35 years after reunification, it seems as if soccer in the East has a future again.
