Darßer NaturfilmFestival 2025: Program section "Citizens of the Sea"
"Over 90% of the animal species in the deep sea are probably still undiscovered," says Dr. Torben Riehl. His mission is urgent: he wants to study the creatures before they become extinct. Together with an international research team, he sets off for the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Riehl has to take on the role of chief scientist for the first time. The entire responsibility lies with him. Four days away from the nearest possible port, isolated in the middle of the Atlantic, you have to be able to improvise. Soil samples are sometimes x-rayed by the ship's doctor to see how microorganisms burrow into them. Or geologists try to collect Sahara dust with a weather balloon on a deep-sea fishing rod. What sounds like a sailor's yarn becomes reality on the research vessel METEOR.
