Together, the star tenor and the early music experts explore the era in which accompanied solo singing first became a trend - a hitherto unheard-of form of expressing the innermost self. Rolando Villazón's musical journey of the soul takes us from Monteverdi's beginnings in Mantua at the end of the 16th century via Venice and Bergamo to Paris and Germany, where composers such as Schütz, a pupil of Monteverdi, opened hearts with this new way of making music.
