Tasmania is shaped by its Antarctic past, rugged climate, and ancient rainforests. The archipelago is home to a unique array of wildlife: egg-laying mammals such as the platypus and the echidna, white kangaroos, and fish that prefer to walk rather than swim. Like rocks in the surf, the islands serve as a breeding ground for petrels and little penguins—a wild natural paradise bathed in the brilliantly colorful glow of the Southern Lights.
