Public expert discussion "State of the peatlands in Vorpommern-Rügen: Status report and future prospects" - Speaker: Sally Raese, project manager in peatland protection, Date: October 27, 2025, Time: 18:00 - 19:00
The BÜNDNIS 90/DIE GRÜNEN + DIE PARTEI district parliamentary group invites you to a public expert discussion on the state of the moors in the region on October 27, 2025. As part of the regular parliamentary group meeting, Sally Raese, project manager for moorland protection, will present a status report and outline future prospects for some of the 2,664 moorland areas in Vorpommern-Rügen.
Moors play a crucial role in both climate protection and the preservation of biodiversity. As natural carbon reservoirs, intact peatlands bind considerable amounts of CO₂ and thus make a significant contribution to reducing greenhouse gas emissions. They also provide a unique habitat for specialized animal and plant species.
"The protection and renaturation of our moors in Vorpommern-Rügen is not only an ecological necessity, but also an investment in the future viability of our region," explains Dirk Niehaus, parliamentary group leader of the Greens in the district council. "With this expert discussion, we would like to update our own knowledge, but also raise public awareness of the importance of these valuable ecosystems and discuss concrete options for action to preserve them."
The event will take place from 18:00 to 19:00 p.m. and is aimed at all interested citizens, experts and representatives of the press. The presentation will be followed by an opportunity for discussion and professional exchange.
