How do you bring history to life so that it can be understood? In his debut novel, Rostock-based author Ernst Pradel sets out in search of his roots, which lie in Silesia, Imperial Austria, Poland, and Mecklenburg. Through literary vignettes, he recounts his own story and that of his family from the 1930s through their arrival in reunified Germany and on the banks of the Warnow River. Often, it is through small, everyday incidents that the connections between grand historical events and personal fates are revealed. The narrative is imbued with a human warmth that turns its attention to “ordinary” people and their untold life stories—a book that invites readers to engage in conversation about history and the present.
