Cello and Piano: A Blend of World Music, Folk, and Film Music
Film score composer Falk Schönfelder and boundary-pushing cellist Matthias Hübner blend their respective musical backgrounds into a rich, sonic dialogue that oscillates between joyful lightness and dreamy profundity. The duo employs the cello and piano in modern and diverse ways. Despite both musicians’ classical training, they are true boundary-pushers on their respective instruments. Thus, their program—composed entirely of original works—ranges from expansive soundscapes to transcendental moments, while remaining rhythmically captivating, playful, and experimental in both composition and performance. Both musicians have been active for many years in various ensembles and musical styles, have released numerous CDs, and are prize winners of national and international competitions.
Falk Schönfelder has made a name for himself as a film score composer for various documentaries (e.g., “Weit”), as a music producer for various plays and film scores, and as a sound engineer for various festivals (e.g., the Usedom Music Festival). As a pianist, he has been active for years in many different bands, ranging from larger rock bands to small chamber music ensembles. In the process, he has developed a very personal sound that is inherent to his music.
Matthias Hübner is a multiple winner of international songwriting contests and performs between 60 and 100 concerts a year. Through years of intensive concert activity, the artist has created his own musical language, which draws on folk traditions and the energy of rock music while being refined with a classical, concert-oriented compositional ethos. What makes his music unique is his distinctive use of the cello. With its captivating sound, it evokes the human voice. “The musician doesn’t just make it sing—he also makes it sob, scream, grunt, and cry.” “Thrillingly funny and full of joie de vivre, yet at the same time moving to tears.”
