The Days of Exile & Festival for Ostracized Music, an initiative of the Körber Foundation, will take place for the first time in Schwerin from 8 to 14 November 2025. In a tour, the State Museum presents two generations of artists, two different careers and the unifying experience of exile - and invites visitors to take part in a discussion.
A tour of the reopened Staatliches Museum Schwerin with department head Dr. Björn Egging.
Two generations of artists, two different careers and the unifying experience of exile: the tour presents works by Max Beckmann and Theo Balden from the time of the Second World War, when both were in exile: Balden in London and Beckmann in Amsterdam. The already prominent Beckmann lost his professorship under pressure from the National Socialists and left Germany. After his arrest, the communist Theo Balden was able to flee abroad with a false passport.
We look forward to your visit and cordially invite you to talk to us about persecution, flight and exile in the past and present.
Meeting point: Foyer on the ground floor
Guided tour fee: €5 per person, in advance and at the box office
