A short journey into the Cretaceous period

Our landscape is a child of the Ice Age. The legacy of the glaciers includes many erratic blocks, but also much older rocks, which the force of the ice loosened from underground and brought to the surface. The chalk of the Malchow district is a first-class geological feature. The rock is similar to the Rügen chalk, but is around 20 million years older. Until the 20th century, the chalk lime was burned in several lime kilns around Fleesensee and Kölpinsee. The last lime kiln operated in Nossentin until the 1920s.

The Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park invites you on a short excursion to the former Nossentin lime pit. Thomas Fitzke, former director of the chalk museum on Rügen and now based in the Lake District, will give a talk on exciting details from the Cretaceous period and bring along interesting exhibits. Afterwards, Evelin Kartheuser from the Nossentiner/Schwinzer Heath Nature Park will take you on a short excursion to the Nossentiner Kalkberg.

The event is free of charge, a small donation for the Friends of the Nature Park is welcome.
