He was one of the few Western artists to make it to the former GDR with the Sonderzug - and now he's making the leap to the big screen. Udo Lindenberg has been in the music business for almost 50 years, even if the road to the top was not easy.
Lindenberg (Jan Bülow) knew early on where he wanted to go, and that was to the top. He escaped his provincial Westphalian home at an early age, worked as a drummer and was not deterred by his initial failures. The stolid young musician wanted to take off with German songs and show the world what he was capable of. It doesn't take long before the music world and, of course, the world of women are at his feet...
Hermine Huntgeburth ("The White Massai") dedicates her new film to the legendary musician, from his childhood and youth to his first attempts as a drummer, his big breakthrough, the highs and lows of being an artist. The film does not show a linear success story, but also allows for leaps in time. There is a particular focus on the musician's early days in Hamburg, where he developed his unmistakable style and made the acquaintance of long-time companions.
The leading role is played by Jan Bülow ("Dogs of Berlin"), who embodies the idiosyncratic musician with his gestures, facial expressions and vocals and, according to critics, is absolutely convincing. One of his most important companions, Steffi Stephan, is played by "Fack ju Göhte" star Max von der Groeben, and as Lindenberg's parents we see Charly Hübner ("Polizeiruf 110") and Julia Jentsch ("Der Pass"), as well as Detlev Buck ("Rubbeldiekatz").
"Do your thing!" is an absolute must for every Lindenberg fan, but even without a deeper connection to this German music luminary, the film is an absolutely entertaining cinematic experience.
