An evening exploring the culture of growing up in Germany—between protection, high expectations, and encouragement.
Our thesis: The current culture of growing up in Germany is such that the negative consequences for children, parents, and society outweigh the benefits.
Everywhere we look, we read about highly stressed and anxious parents, children who feel threatened and overwhelmed, and social institutions (daycare centers and schools) operating at the limits of their capacity. Added to this is a highly charged, often sensationalist public discourse on these issues that further fuels the crisis of parenthood and childhood.
Norbert Schneider, professor of family sociology, and Maria Bellinger, psychiatrist and psychotherapist, will discuss the issues outlined above—relating to family, parenthood, and child-rearing—with the audience and critically examine whether the situation is truly that serious and what can be done to relieve the pressure on parents and children.
