The action group Eine Welt e.V. | Weltladen Schwerin, in cooperation with Kino unterm Dach e.V., is bringing the feature film “Cotton Queen” (Germany, France, Palestine, Sudan 2025, 93 min) to Schwerin. This very first feature film by a Sudanese female director will be screened with German dubbing on Thursday, October 15, at 5:15 p.m. in the auditorium of the Volkshochschule, Puschkinstr. 13. Admission is free.
Director Suzannah Mirghani’s film takes us on an emotional journey into a world unknown to us. Nafisa (15) grows up in a traditional cotton-farming village in Sudan, surrounded by her grandmother’s fairy-tale stories. When a businessman from abroad arrives with genetically modified seeds and grand development plans, she becomes a key figure in the power struggle over the village’s future and, in the process, discovers her own strength. Torn between her family’s demands and her desire for independence, she must find her own path. The story combines female self-empowerment with historical entanglements. “With great sensitivity, it offers a rare perspective on the realities of life in Sudan” (Film Reviews).
As part of the statewide “weltwechsel” event series, the Weltladen Schwerin invites you to watch this film and look beyond the borders of Mecklenburg-Schwerin to connect with other realities of life. After the screening, there will be time for discussion about the film, personal impressions, and individual experiences related to generational conflicts and self-empowerment.
