Lieder recital: Op. 48 - An evening in five worlds of sound
The Lied duo Mareike Zorko (alto) and
Wan-Yen Li (piano) have put together an extraordinarily diverse program under the seemingly sober title "Opus 48".
Bach, Brahms, Grieg, Strauss, Schönberg - five composers, five manuscripts.
A compilation from Johann Sebastian Bach's cantata BWV 48 "Ich elender Mensch, wer
wird mich erlösen" (I wretched man, who will redeem me), which is of course a must on the occasion of Bach's birthday, is
framed by Edvard Grieg's popular Op. 48 by Edvard Grieg with songs such as "Zur Rosenzeit" and "Ein Traum"
as well as songs by Johannes Brahms, which show the composer in his variety of expression between
art song and folk song-like simplicity.
The interval is followed by a short but intense excursion into the Second Viennese School with three
songs by Arnold Schönberg: concentrated, angular, of haunting emotionality. The
finale is formed by five songs by Richard Strauss - late Romantic sonority, radiant
melodies, orchestral piano accompaniment: music that, in all its sensuality, already foreshadows the departure from
a great song tradition.
An event organized by the Society for the Promotion of the Greifswald Bach Week e.V.
