Elizabeth von Arnim (1866–1941) wrote “Elizabeth on Rügen,” one of the best-known travel novels set on Rügen. In this autobiographical work, the author describes her “road trip” as a woman traveling alone across Germany’s largest island shortly before the turn of the century. With a sharp pen and affectionate irony, she tackles highly topical themes: the realities of life and the dreams of women, humanity’s rediscovery of nature, the nascent tourism industry on Rügen, and, of course, the recurring theme of love with all its trials and tribulations.
As if in passing, Elizabeth describes the Island of Rügen, the tourists, and the locals she encounters along her journey, including the Baltic resorts of Göhren, Sellin, Baabe, Binz, Jasmund National Park, the chalk cliffs, Lauterbach, Mönchgut, and Wittow, as well as the islands of Vilm and Hiddensee.
In this reading-performance-concert, Rügen native Christina Kraft brings the novel’s characters to life. She is accompanied by pianist Alexander Girod from Greifswald, who masterfully brings over 100 years of music history to life: from classical to jazz to modern, many well-known and lesser-known pieces can be heard—in keeping with the book’s underlying tone, primarily by female composers and musicians.
