Mathew James White was born in Hamilton, New Zealand in 1971.
He discovered his love of music at an early age and formed his first band as a teenager. Influenced by his compatriot Nei Finn and the band Crowded House, he wrote his songs in the good old tradition of singer-songwriters, which he crowned with his unmistakable hook lines. In order to bring his music to a wider audience, he moved to Syndey, Australia, at the age of 18. Even back then, he financed himself exclusively through his music and achieved the status of a "local hero" in the local live scene.
Mathew lived in London for six years and wrote his songs with songwriters such as Alex Von Soos (co-writer of the All Saints UK 1 hit "Black Coffee"), Joe Cang (writer of the Aswad UK 1 hit "Shine") and writer/producer Martyn Phillips (Roachford, Jesus Jones, London Beat, Soul To Soul). With the latter he recently founded the band Mpath (www.myspace.com/mpathmusic)
Mathew James White has lived in Berlin since 2006. He performs all year round in Europe, especially in Germany.
When Mathew James White performed live in a London club at the end of 2003, he came to the attention of producer Steve Lyon (Depeche Mode, The Cure, Soul Asylum, Reamonn). He was so impressed by White's charismatic voice and the unique arrangements with emotionally charged melodies that he made Mathew James White an offer immediately after the end of the gig, which resulted in a partnership.
If you like the music of Vance Joy, George Ezra, Hollow Coves and Jack Johnson, you will certainly also appreciate Mathew James White. Born in New Zealand and now based in Germany for many years, the musician is often compared to the aforementioned greats of the music business due to his repertoire full of catchy melodies.
Known for his emotionally uplifting compositions that are both soothing and mood-lifting, his music - best described as "Kiwi Dream Folk" - can be heard on Netflix and MTV (UK), among others. He regularly tours Europe and has built up a strong and growing fan base over the years - often playing to sell-out crowds. A career highlight was his appearance at the 2017 Blue Balls Festival in Lucerne, where he performed alongside stars such as David Gray, Peter Doherty and José González.
While he continues to tour with enthusiasm, he also focuses on writing and composing for television. This led to his most recent song "Only The Light" - an alt-pop anthem - being placed in the US Netflix mini-series "From Scratch".
To date, he has released eight albums, three of them exclusively on his website - 'We're Home Now (2023),' 'Getting Through This With Positive Sounds' (2021) and 'Old and New' (2019). His fourth album, "I'm Thinking of You" (2017), is his most personal work to date and was heavily influenced by the loss of his first son in 2014.
