Bicycle Tour with Dr. Angela Pfennig
References to the popularity of day-trip destinations in the Stralsund area—such as Hainholz or the island of Dänholm with its inns—date back as far as the 16th century. By the beginning of the 19th century, in addition to the private gardens of city residents, public gardens and garden cafés were increasingly becoming social hubs.
Stralsund boasted a multitude of such coffeehouses and garden restaurants catering to all social classes: Bürgergarten, Rühes Konzerthaus, Kurhaus Devin, Meinkes Garten, Zentralpark, Stadtkoppel, Casinogarten, Martinsgarten, Volksgarten, Schwedenschanze, Heinzelmanns Garten, and others. Although social life has long since faded away at most of these historic places of enjoyment, venerable trees often still bear witness to the splendor of those places of entertainment.
This bike tour takes you on a journey through history to explore Stralsund’s significant former garden restaurants.
