In an essayistic style, this documentary explores the eventful history of Hiddensee since the 1920s, while also addressing current conflicts. As you watch, you’ll quickly feel that sense of longing that this small Baltic Sea island never fails to evoke.
The name of this small island between Darß and Rügen has long been synonymous with a certain way of life. A certain charm that has attracted people from the bohemian, cultural, and academic worlds since the late 19th century—and which also inspires this film. Yet the voice-over commentary disrupts overly romantic sentiments early on by pointing out that the island village of Vitte was already being advertised as “Jew-free” as early as 1922. Later, the film states that the island is “small enough to see how personal lives and history intertwine”—right up to the current local political squabbles over the mayor’s office in the municipality. The film’s main characters—ranging from silent-film icon Asta Nielsen to the musicians of the punk band “Feeling B”—include the daughter of actress Inge Keller, the village pastor, and a photographer who stages fashion shoots on the beach. And, of course, the great writer Gerhart Hauptmann, who spent decades on the island as a summer guest and, despite certain acts of homage to the Nazis, was given an honorary funeral by representatives of the Red Army at the Kloster cemetery in 1945.
