Clean water is essential for Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. However, climate change, water scarcity, and nutrient runoff are putting pressure on these resources. On September 8, we will discuss political solutions with experts, Minister Till Backhaus, and other state legislative election candidates.

Clean and readily available water is essential for the future of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Groundwater, the Baltic Sea, lakes, and rivers form the foundation of numerous economic sectors, such as tourism, agriculture, and fisheries.

At the same time, our water resources are coming under increasing pressure: Climate change is leading to falling water levels in many places, while nutrient and pollutant inputs are threatening water quality. In particular, nitrate contamination of groundwater and excessive nutrient inputs into rivers and coastal waters pose major challenges. The key lies in how policymakers integrate agriculture, nature conservation, economic development, and the protection of our water resources.

In the run-up to the state parliamentary election, Deutsche Umwelthilfe invites you to a public discussion. Representatives of the democratic parties in the state parliament will present their proposed solutions to water scarcity, nitrate pollution, coastal waters, and sustainable agriculture, and answer your questions.

Following opening remarks by Dagmar Koziolek from the Rostock Office for Environmental and Climate Protection, Prof. Dr. Maren Voss from the Leibniz Institute for Baltic Sea Research in Warnemünde and Christian Rohlfing, a farmer and board member of the North Vorpommern Farmers’ Association, will provide expert insights into the topic.

We will then discuss solutions to water scarcity and water pollution with Agriculture Minister Till Backhaus and other candidates from the democratic state parliamentary parties.
