The Ospedale della Pietà is just one of four orphanages in the Venetian Republic that already had a baby hatch during the Baroque period. The foundlings were orphans with a caveat. Their mothers left identifying marks—such as half a picture or a coin—in case they might claim them back later. The girls received musical training and performed, hidden behind masks and bars. The orchestra gained international fame, particularly under concertmaster Antonio Vivaldi. At the same time, the for-profit orphanage served as a marriage market for men from high society. The violinist Celestina, who has been promised to an officer, also faces the threat of such an unwanted marriage. Vivaldi, however, immediately recognizes Celestina’s talent and sincerity: he appoints the hesitant young woman as first violin. Vivaldi refuses to let her talent go to waste. The violin could become an instrument of liberation for Celestina.
